Show Review: Jake Scott comes back to Nashville and he brought all his friends
By McKayla Grace
Marathon Music Works hosted a multi-genre night of showstoppers on Oct. 25. The show was a physical representation of the importance of connections in the Nashville music scene. Each artist brought their own unique flair while complementing one another’s work and sharing the way they’ve contributed to the success of the others.
The night began with an opening set from country artist Josh Kerr, who warmed up the crowd and set the tone. Next, Sam MacPherson took the stage for the first time in Nashville, immediately commanding attention.
Taking a turn in the indie-pop direction, he played a few new songs, including “Backseat” and “Play Dumb.” Both tracks reveal his ability to weave the sad and the slap with strong instrumental peaks and moving lyrics. If these singles are a reflection of his personal experience, Sam MacPherson has been hurt just enough to keep it cheeky.
By the end of Sam’s set, the whole venue knew it was going to be a night to remember. Jake Scott came out strong with musical guest and friend Josie Dunn performing their single “CWJBHN.” If he hadn’t done so already, Jake established himself as the king of collabs. He didn’t stop with Josie Dunne. Throughout the set, we also saw performances from Russell Dickerson on their hit single “She Likes It” as well as more from Josh Kerr, who came back to stage in Jake’s new “Lavender” merch. A fitting decision as Jake Scott announced his upcoming album and title track “Lavender,” named after his favorite and most frequent muse — his wife Rachel.
Weaving new and old tracks throughout his set, Jake shared that this was one of his favorite shows he’s ever played. And it was for sure my favorite show of his I’ve ever seen. The audience interaction and backstories behind his favorite tracks were spot on. Some of my top picks from the show include, “I Don’t Miss You,” “She” and “Working for You.” Make sure you see him on tour, to get an early listen of his new track “In Another Life.” It will wreck you.
If you’re lucky, he will pay tribute to Miss Swift and cover “All Too Well.” His version teeters on the edge of pop-punk, especially on that killer bridge. Of course, the crowd lost it at that point, so the fact he joined the crowd for “Good Day” was the cherry on top of an already perfect set. What a coincidence the show fell on a Tuesday night… Jake Scott knows what he’s doing closing with a classic like “Tuesdays.”
You’ve got one more week to see Jake Scott and his talented friends on this circuit. You won’t want to miss it. In the meantime, prep by listening to some of his greatest hits.
