This is the Story of a BOY - JORDY at The Basement East Nashville
On the night of the release of his album “BOY,” JORDY graced The Basement East stage with his fabulous presence. His energy and range provided the perfect match to open for Spencer Sutherland. The combination created an environment of kindness, acceptance and a dang good time.
Before the show, an unnamed source set my expectations high, describing JORDY’s style as “gay boi pop.” And our BOY did not disappoint! Nashville was fully entertained from start to finish with a surprise appearance from Joy Oladokun and a near constant stream of personal anecdotes from JORDY that made the experience intimate and exciting.
One of my favorite things about live music is its ability to transport someone to a place hidden away from the daily stressors of normal life if only for a few hours. On stage, JORDY embodies that energy. With each impressive riff you could feel the weight of the world lifting from the room. Watching other audience members watch JORDY was pure joy. Everyone was collectively living out their own dream as JORDY made his come true with incredible range, audience engagement and the sparkly cowboy hat that elevated the whole vibe.
With “BOY” releasing mere hours from his set time, JORDY gave Nashville a taste of the album that would receive acclaim from the likes of “Billboard,” GMA, and “HuffPost” to name a few.
If you’re not already listening to the album as you read this, you’re making a mistake. Let me help you out:
After sharing a personal favorite, “Dry Spell,” (you can guess the context), he set the room on fire with a cover of Hilary Duff’s “Come Clean” and “Good Not Great,” the bop borrowing inspiration from Lenka’s “The Show.”
All of this would have made an iconic show on its own, but JORDY leveled up audience engagement with his “Story of a Boy.” Changing the POV of Nine Days’ “Absolutely (Story of a Girl),” this song quickly became an anthem for the trans community, going viral on TikTok and providing JORDY the opportunity to share the track on national platforms like The Kelly Clarkson Show.
At the Basement East, JORDY introduced the song by highlighting its social impact and the honor he feels in providing something that the trans community can relate to and use for advocacy, sharing his commitment to continue making safe spaces for everyone.
Spencer Sutherland shared the sentiment with his energetic set that followed, creating an experience that I would 100% wake up and relive over and over again.
After the show, JORDY stayed at his merch table to chat and take photos with fans. At 11pm CT, “BOY” dropped, and those of us hanging out at the table broke into cheers, chanting his name and congratulating him on the accomplishment. It was the purest moment. Little did we know the album would be charting the next day! (PS.. JORDY if you’re reading this, send me the group pic from the merch table 😊)
Anyway.. I’m done fangirling for now. But you better believe I’m joining next time JORDY is in Nashville! See you there?
