From the depths of Amsterdam, has emerged the spacey 70s musician Joep Meyer, better known as Cosmic Crooner. And with him, comes the debut single “Deep Down in Jazz.”

“Deep Down in Jazz” embodies everything I loved about Arctic Monkeys’ Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino fused into one song. It feels like walking on stars or swimming in a pool of melted silver. Smooth crooning (hence the moniker?) meets playful piano and lyrics that tell the story of a musician destined for a downfall. Cosmic Crooner cites his musical inspirations as Serge Gainsbourg and David Bowie, along with modern musicians such as Weyes Blood and Lemon Twigs. Meyer says the vibe of his music produces a reaction similar to that of the color “Paris Green”— a wonderfully ethereal, but unfortunately poisonous, pigment. The color plays a lead role in the music video for “Deep Down in Jazz.”

The music video, shot by Lin Bartraij on Kodak film, is a piece of art in itself. Inspired by French New Wave films and Stanley Kubrick, the video is colorful and whimsical in every way imaginable. Cosmic Crooner sports an assortment of 70s style suits and his own band merch while galavanting around Lake Como. It’s the rose-tinted dream we’re all wishing for right now.

If Cosmic Crooner’s debut is an indicator of what’s to come, get excited. You can keep up with him and his new music on Instagram and Spotify!
