PREMIERE: Joshua Bassett Calmly Throws Caution to the Wind in "Common Sense"

By McKayla Dyk

In the midst of this COVID-crazy, Joshua Bassett surprised us with some much needed “Common Sense.” His new single dropped today (Friday, April 3rd), teasing the forthcoming EP.

Joshua Bassett entered center-stage on our screens and in our lives as the teen heart-throb of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (HSMTMTS). Since then, we’ve watched his inevitable climb to fame alongside co-star Olivia Rodrigo, both releasing stellar singles and garnering hundreds of thousands of fans in what seemed like the blink of an eye.

Fans knew from the start that Bassett would be a songwriting force to be reckoned with. His ad-libbed performance in the season finale of HSMTMTS warned us of his innate ability to tear up our hearts. “Common Sense” showcases the same honest innocence we instantly loved on-screen.

Bassett creates a backdrop for “Common Sense” with finger-picking and acoustic licks, allowing his lyrics to take the lead. Simple and sweet, the song reflects on young love. It perfectly captures the underlying contentment found in a safe, budding romance - one that withstands the ups and downs life throws at it - one that deserves pursuit against all worldly logic.

“Common sense told me she was not worthwhile.

Common sense said don’t go the extra mile.

Common sense said go back and reconcile.

But common sense forgot about her smile.”

And the whole world said, “Awwwww…”

Listeners could easily get lost in the sentiment and rhythm of the song and miss the crux of its message. Bassett seamlessly tackles an internal struggle, wrestling with his options to either let go or pursue a resolution.

“I think I love you.

I want to love you.

Please let me love you.

I wish to show you how to love.”

To the world’s relief, the narrative quickly resolves. Love is deemed worthy of pursuit against all odds and the internal butterflies incumbent in every budding relationship are back. Both melodically and lyrically, Bassett maintains a calm resolve that leaves listeners at ease and begs them to hit ‘repeat.’
