Will Hyde Releases Music Video for his Track, “meant to be.”

By Maddie Rice

20-year-old Australian artist Will Hyde first made a debut in the music industry at 15-years-old as half of the Australian duo, SŸDE, whose music has gained millions of streams over the years. His new indie-pop solo project is slowly gaining traction, and many are looking forward to upcoming releases.

Recently, Hyde dropped his second single, “meant to be.,” with a music video premiere on YouTube on August 4th. Regarding the release of the video, Hyde says: “It feels really exciting to put out another part of me with this video! I think that it takes you into my mind so you can get to know me better. There’s shades of light and also darkness, which is important for me to show as a contrast. Both are a part of me, and both influence the music.”

The video opens with a close-up shot of Hyde’s face as he walks down a dirt road around “golden hour.” He hops into an old, orange truck and makes his way to a huge mansion. The use of montage as Hyde walks throughout the house, looking out the windows and dancing around, makes for quick pacing and creates a sense of urgency. Similarly, the quick switches to incorporate unique camera angles add to the pacing, and the different lighting choices—including the utilization of red—add a layer of mystery and darkness.

Toward the end of the video, Hyde sits on a bed all alone, until a girl appears and then quickly disappears multiple times; her presence is recurring, yet fleeting, representing Hyde questioning if she is “meant to be” with him. The closing shot mimics the shot in the beginning, placing Hyde on the same dirt road later that night. The video overall has a grainy film quality, and his wardrobe and other props add to this vintage aesthetic.

Hyde says that his favorite shot in the video “is on the balcony at the end.” As he continues, “We were filming in this big old mansion (an honour) and mid-filming, I decided to get up on the ledge and start boogie-ing. There were these big floodlight poles we had up, which was super awesome. I like watching all the crew on set go about things. Working on a set the size we had was a new experience, and I just enjoyed the process, really.”

Aside from this release, Hyde also released a behind-the-scenes video for the “meant to be.” video shoot, which you can watch below.
