Introducing: 'Spoon Me' by Hickey Eyes
By Reegan Saunders
Do you need a Friday pick-me-up? From the heat of an atypical midwestern summer emerges the latest Detroit music project that goes by the name of Hickey Eyes. The duo consists of Juliane Bednarz and Jake LeMond—who, along with his history of touring with Michigander and Hala, has released a few singles of his own.
Hickey Eyes’ first single, “Spoon Me,” was released today, and it sets the tone for what I hope will be a future EP. Jake and Juliane’s smooth vocals wrap their metaphorical arms around you and you are transported to fields of tall grass while you listen. This song is so intimate and warm, you can practically feel the sun pouring through your window. It’s the perfect song to sing along to as you drive down the highway. It was like love at first sight.
Along with the release of the single, Hickey Eyes dropped the “Spoon Me” music video, complete with enough goofy picnic fun for viewers at home to hold on to. In the video, Juliane and Jake bounce around local parks and project spacey videos on brick walls, which definitely earned them a few looks from socially distant pedestrians. And, better yet, the duo is costumed in Dickies coveralls (I’m adding those to my shopping list right now!). It will have you smiling the entire time.
“Spoon Me” solidifies everything I love about the Detroit music scene. Local musicians and friends become backup vocalists and videographers—collaboration at it’s finest.
