The Nostalgic Flair of Corey Harper's 'overcast'
By Cassidy Brohl
Corey Harper is a singer/songwriter from Portland, Oregon. His latest EP, Overcast, dropped on Friday, June 26th. Here, each track is discussed and detailed.
Track 1: overcast
This is the introduction to the EP. When Harper sings, “When the rain has passed, we will finally see the light of the overcast,” he’s mainly saying that no matter what you’re going through or how hard life can be, life will always get better. This is a great message especially with what’s going on in the world today. It’s a very chill and mellow introduction which is a great way to start the EP.
Track 2: entertainment
Entertainment is one of the two tracks that have been released early. This song talks about being sick of the “entertainment” and falling apart with what’s going on outside. More on the deeper level, this track has a great beat that almost makes it happier sounding. I really love the message behind ‘entertainment’. Corey’s vocals are excellent and match the song perfectly.
Track 3: fade to black
“fade to black” makes up the last of the two tracks that were pre-released.
Here, Harper expresses his more depressing feelings throughout this song by singing about how he’s sick of being conflicted with his life and how he already feels that everyone important to him has faded from his life. The guitar-playing gives the song such a unique touch, matching Harper’s voice.
Track 4: crave
On this track, Harper talks about how he misses his old partner, which leads to him doing anything to get rid of the empty feeling he has in his life. He regrets breaking things off with them which gives the song the title “crave”—He’s craving the emotional and physical feelings he had with his past lover.
The track begins with a piano being played slowly, which then gets mixed in with many other beats and instruments. I really love everything about this track.
Track 5: pinball
Continuing on the topic about love, this song expresses how Harper wants one more night with his partner and how he wishes they could last together, but how they know it won’t work out and they need to part their ways.
Harper is clearly heartbroken that his relationship is ending. This is known via the track’s steady acoustic sound with vocals that match the guitar, creating a calming tone.
Track 6: 25
“25” has to be my favorite song on the EP.
It has an empty arena sound with Harper’s voice echoing through the room. Here, he mainly focuses on questioning if his partner really left for the reasons they said they were leaving for. After a couple years post them leaving, he’s starting to reminisce about the times they had together, which leads him to doing anything he can to get rid of the feeling.
Track 7: the otherside
This song is an instrumental conclusion to overcast, which gives it a great ending. The piano being played summarizes all the feelings you’ve felt during every other song into one emotion. I really find that this is a great way to end the EP and feel as though there could not have been a better conclusion.
Overall, overcast by Corey Harper is such a different sounding kind of EP, but I honestly grew to love it as each track played. My emotions whilst listening to this EP became stronger the more I listened.
I recommend this EP to anyone that is struggling with something in life, or needs something they can relate to, especially in the realm of longing and heartbreak.
