Nightly's 'you should probably just hang up' is the perfect pop breakup anthem

By Christianne Gormley

If you’re thinking about getting in your feelings/wanting to call up a past flame to pass time this quarantine, Nightly says think again.

The Nashville-based indie band’s latest single “you should probably hang up” is the perfect pop breakup anthem everyone needs to listen to as we transition into summer.

The band said, "We wrote 'you should probably just hang up' about a toxic situation. The song came to us super quickly, and we immediately recorded and produced it in Joey's basement."

Nightly signature style of using simplexity throughout their music by creating a story with relatable lyrics complimenting a rather complex instrumental, is a classic ‘Nightly move’ many listeners always enjoy and look forward to.

The first few seconds of the song immediately transports you into Nightly’s world where lead singer Jonathan Capeci starts off with what went down in the relationship.

And as the chorus begins, the savage comes out.

“If you think I’d call you

You should probably hang up

It’s 3 in the morning

I don’t want to wake up

With your voice in my head

It’s only messing me up

If you think I’d call you

You should probably hang up”

The single’s empowering and angsty/emo lyrics that meshes beautifully with its overall colorful 80s-esque vibe is something that you can’t help but dance alone in your room to while singing along at the top of your lungs.

As we are left with the next few chapters of quarantine, the bop has become a powerful reminder to really think about the decisions we make during dark times, and to most of all, look forward to what is to come.

From wanting a person to realizing self-worth and being ready to leave and move on, Nightly’s take on modern romance and its experiences can describe what a lot of people might be going through these days — being on the opposite end of the line or simply wanting to be left alone,

even in isolation.
