Indie's Favorite Act, The Drums, Are Back With New Song, 'Body Chemistry
By: Hailey Hale
The Drums are making an exciting comeback after a two year hiatus with the fiery, yet extremely personal new single ‘Body Chemistry’, along with a much anticipated North American tour to accompany their upcoming album Brutalism. This marks the beginning of a new era for the band, in which the mastermind behind the music, Jonny Pierce, delves deep into his emotions and explores the things that make him the person he is. This new era is all about self-care, transformation, and being alright with not being alright.
On January 15th, after a week of teasing that something new was on the horizon, the band finally announced new single ‘Body Chemistry’, the first song written for the new album and also the song that represents what the new album is all about. In this track Pierce tells of how he went to extreme lengths to try and have some semblance of normalcy in his life, yet at the end of the day he felt the exact same as the day before. Stuck in loop of hopelessness he started to wonder if feeling sad was just in his DNA. While the lyrics are quite dismal, the sound is quite the opposite with a fast guitar and a strong pop beat, highlighting the light in the dark.
Not only is this single groundbreaking in its approach on mental health, but it is also one of the first times Pierce has allowed collaborators to help with the making of the music. This was the first time a live drummer was used, a guitarist was brought in, and it was all mixed by legendary producer, Chris Coady. The way that Pierce undertook the production allowed him more time to envision what the future of The Drums should be, making this his most innovative and mature single yet.
With the announcement of ‘Body Chemistry’ also came the announcement of a major North American tour to support the new album Brutalism, which is currently available for pre-sale. Hitting almost every major American city The Drums will hit the road on April 24th, kicking off the tour with an already sold out show in Tustin, California. Tickets are on sale now and you want to grab them fast, because you do not want to miss out on this new and improved era of The Drums.
