One to Watch: Check out Maisyn and her Debut Single, “Cool Grl”
By Reegan Saunders
What’s your new year’s resolution?
In 2021, I plan to become a more honest and open person, in my writing and in life. These days, we could all benefit from the cold hard truth, and what better way than through song? If I’m looking forward to anything this year, it’s musicians who are not afraid to share their stories.
At the top of my list of musicians to watch this year is Los Angeles based musician, Maisyn. Originally known for her music under the name Jessie Mason, Maisyn emerges with a brand new energy. Her project features the same, for lack of a better word, “cool” vocals, but with a more vulnerable twist. Maisyn breaks out this year with her debut single, “Cool Grl” (released January 29), a song that is the aftershock of heartbreak.
“Cool Grl” sounds perfectly smooth through a set of headphones. Its lively guitar track and beautifully mixed synths, layered with Maisyn’s vocals, makes for quite the anthem. As the song touches on lyrically, the “no strings” relationship trope from your favorite rom-coms is far from reality. Yes, it works for some, but the key to any relationship is open communication. That said, “Cool Grl” is all about coming to realize your own feelings and opening up; it’s a track about vulnerability and desire.
“you’re filling my head and half of the bed how could I help it”
“I can’t be your cool girl honey ‘cause I want you to love me”
“To me, the ultimate ‘cool grl’ is indifferent, effortless, and of course a construct of romantic-comedy-driven imagination,” said Maisyn. She continues, “Everybody loves and yearns; it’s just a matter of who will admit it or not. For most of my life, I desperately wanted to be the ‘cool grl’ because I was afraid that wanting to be wanted would turn me into a cliche. At this point, I’d rather be emotional and messy than nonchalant and bottled up.”
