Ruby Red Goes Lo-Fi with 'Superbloom'

By Maria Kornacki

What’s cooler than starting off your music video playing guitar in the forest, under the sun’s glow? It may not currently be the appropriate season for singing out in nature, but it is the right time for discovering new music! With that said, Ruby Red released a slick music video for their latest track, “Superbloom,” on November 22nd, and it’s an absolute trip.

The duo, Daniel Laner and Fernando Fine,  are childhood friends and have been making music since elementary school. Laner dove into the music industry, working with Louis Bell (Post Malone), while Fine was working towards a degree in Neuroscience at UCLA. Together, they formed Ruby Red in 2018

The pair left their hearts on their sleeves with this track’s melancholic lyrics and signature synth-pop instrumentation. Inspired by Brazilian disco, Ruby Red’s “Superbloom” sounds like a song you might hear on an 80s dance floor. The chorus lines,  “Like a flower that loves to unfold and she said I know,” are sure to get people in the groove within the first few seconds of hearing them.

The accompanying music video is a digital daze: throughout, multiple tabs and screens float off into the abyss as rainbow and space-themed screensavers take the viewer on a wavy ride. The tempo of the song is best accompanied by the lustful guitar riff that magically slides off of the syllables of the lyrics—Tame Impala’s influence on them is apparent.

The lyrics center around being a young adult, covering essential coming-of-age themes. On top of that, their finely crafted songwriting adds a seasoned appeal that only elevates them higher. The first listen will have you ready to sing along the second time around.

Their 2018 debut, ‘Lovelock,’ was just a taste of the self-produced eclectic sounds they’re stirring up—currently, the band is preparing to release their second EP. “Superbloom” is available for download and streaming on digital platforms worldwide.
