Confident, fun, and powerful: Jenny March is a force to be reckoned with.

After releasing three fierce, yet thoughtful songs last year—including her heartfelt single, “Rebound”—now, she’s back with “November Nights.” It’s a pop anthem about learning from the past and toasting to new beginnings.

Recently, we had a little Zoom-chat about her new song, her musical inspirations, and why her music is an open book about her life.

Congrats on “November Nights!” What does it mean to you and how did it come about?

I wrote the song with producer Jayden Grey. We started talking about things that were happening in my life, that happened in my past, and we talked about one of my exes. It was a really passionate, but unhealthy relationship.

He started playing some chords and we started writing off of this synth-pad and wrote about that relationship—how there were a lot of highs to it, a lot of low to it. Writing the song was the final release for me to be able to let all that go.

You’ve loved singing and acting since you were really young. How has your songwriting and creative process changed over the years?

As a kid, I just wrote for fun; I didn’t really know what I was doing. When I moved to LA, I was doing a lot of acting. I had no idea where to start becoming a pop artist. My mum helped me a lot.

We found a producer, and I just started doing a lot of sessions, as well as writing on my own [music], but I still really like writing at the piano.

Which artist had the most effect on you and your music?

There are so many different kinds of genres that inspire me. I’d probably say Rihanna had the most influence on me, with her “bad bitch” persona. I always admired how much confidence she had. I grew up being this humble mid-western girl and she taught me to own being a woman and I’ve always admired her for that. I also like that I can dance to her [music].

Speaking of Rihanna, you are a Savage X ambassador! How did that come about?

They reached out to me on Instagram; I was really shocked! But I’m so happy. I just got [a package from them] in the mail, so I’m excited to try it all on.

What are you listening to right now?

Rihanna’s ANTI is always on repeat. I love Post Malone and his cool blend of pop, rock, and hip hop. And I’ve also always loved Halsey. Oh, and folklore by Taylor Swift is so good, as well. Such a good album for Monday feels.

You describe your songs as being open books and your lyrics are very direct and sound honest. Do you only write about your own experiences?

Listen to Rebound on Spotify. Jenny March · Song · 2019.

Definitely. When I was younger, I only used to write about what I was going through. Now, I really like to listen to other peoples’ stories and thoughts. I like to soak up my surroundings, and overhear random conversations in restaurants for inspiration. It’s a lot easier to only write about your own life, though.

Your EP is dropping this year, too. What can we expect from it?

That’s what I’ve been working on during this lockdown season. It’s been a little difficult because a lot of sessions just got canceled. It’s going to be a blend of songs, from hip-hop to pop. I’m super excited and I’ll drop it this fall.

What’s your message to the world?

I had a hard time figuring out who I was. I just want people to be okay with being lost for a little while. And once, you’ve found yourself, don’t stop being yourself for any reason. Don’t care what people will think of you.

“November Nights” is now available on all streaming platforms. Make sure to give it a listen and keep up with Jenny via her socials!
